History and Today

One of the first patents for suspenders was owned by Samuel Clemens in 1871. He was better known as Mark Twain, the author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Suspenders took off as a staple for men in that they literally held up their loose fitting pants. The first ones hooked onto pants; they had buttons on their pants and loops on the suspenders, so they simply fastened them. In 1894, David Roth received a patent for "braces", as they are also sometimes called, that had metal clasps for easy attachment to pants.

They have continued to be in use for different types of workmen, such as plumbers, farmers, carpenters, and firefighters. Despite heavy tool belts or protective clothing, suspenders help pants keep their place through it all.

In the fashion world, suspenders have changed from stylish accessories to classic novelties to antiquated objects and back again over the course of decades. Today, they seem to be in vogue. The overall aesthetic might not be for every man, but there are a myriad ways of using them to reflect one's personality. Check out the various ways to incorporate them into your normal clothing routine.

Mm mm. I love a man in suspenders. Suspenders + tats? YES, PLEASE.

Oh yeah, the history is interesting too! XD Haha, love the background. Mark Twain wasn't only good for sarcasm. Voted up!

You have good taste, Meisjunk! lol

When I was researching for this I was also shocked and pleased to learn Twain's role in the history of suspenders. :)

Thanks so much for voting!

Suspenders went out of fasion when an advertiser, came up with the slogan "This is a hold up" :)

Interesting choice of Hubs.

Haha...this is great. I'm not ultra-hipster, so I've never been able to rock this look. I respect those who can, though :)

mckbirdbks: Haha; that's hilarious! Thanks for sharing. :)

emichael: I'm glad you liked it. What do you 'rock' then?

emichael 9 months ago

Hmm...I'm pretty eclectic, I think. Though I guess you could lump me in with the skinny jean, toms shoes, ironic t-shirt wearing crowd :) Thrift stores like Buffalo Exchange and Funky Monkey are my favorite places to shop. Not sure if they have those where you live...?

Ebower 9 months ago

Sounds like an awesome crowd! I'm not sure I've ever heard of them. No, we don't; I live in a small town in Georgia. Although, I have lived in larger towns before. I like PacSun (although it's usually too expensive for me) and TJMaxx and thrift stores. You can put me in the skinny jean, vans shoes, v neck t-shirt wearing crowd lol

Oooh, yes I forgot. I love a good v-neck. We are friends.

Of course we are friends and not just because we both like Owl City and the same kind of t-shirts lol. Hubpages buddies forever!

Reminds me of Larry King Live...

I can see why. He was actually discussed in some articles I found when I looked up information on suspenders.

Voted up.

In some ways it's an old fashioned look, reminiscent almost of the Amish / Pennsylvania Dutch.

In other ways it's kind of associated with modern style.

Be that as it may, what do you think of the combination of the suspenders with the sleeve tattoo, in one of the large photos?

Blessings.
