From the 70's to Today
New fashion is recycled by old fashion; "Nothing new under the sun," as they say. Therefore, the clothing trends for right now are influenced by the 90's. This means that clothing today is focused on a minimalist approach which includes mostly solid articles of clothing. Also, the 90's were influenced by the 70's, so 2011 trends are also based on that aesthetic but in a different way. The 90's focused on everyday basics like the bell bottoms and peasant shirts. For today, the focus is more on the 70's glamour girl which includes wide leg jeans and blousy shirts. Check out these trends and see if you remember them from an earlier time.
Bright Colors and Florals
Floral patterns can be seen everywhere from flowy shirts, simple short skirts, and dresses. The trick is to not look like a granny. Make sure the cut is modern and fits really well. Bright colors are also making a come back in shirts, skirts, accessories, and even makeup. Don't use them everywhere or you will end up looking like a neon sign and more like a teenager then a sophisticated adult. Choose one neon focus in your outfit and you will stay on target.
V-neck and Thin T shirts
V-neck t shirts continue to be popular. Use them as a basis for a casual look with skinny jeans and flats. Also, these can be dressed up with a skirt and a statement necklace thrown over it. Thin, flowy tshirts are also still popular. They can be worn with camis underneath if they are really thin. Pair them with tailored pieces such as dressy black shorts or fitted pants.
Maxi Dresses and Skirts
Hemlines turn more lady-like in maxi skirts and dresses. A black, long skirt can be a dramatic night-time outfit, while a flowing skirt in a bright color with a tank top can be a casual day-time look. If you are really short or petite avoid the ultra long skirts and dresses, because they can swallow you up. Try the mid-length skirts that are popular instead. Both of these trends create a more lady-like image then what we have seen recently in the past.
Exotic Looks
Vacation inspired prints, such as palm trees, Hawaiian flowers, and fruit are a big part of dresses and skirts for this season. Also, halter tops and flowing fabrics add a feeling of romantic travels. Thin fabrics are layered for practical use and a flirty feel.
Bathingsuits
Vintage bathing suits are still popular. This is an advantage, because the modest fits look flattering on all types of bodies. High waisted bikinis conceal the stomach area and also show off small waists for others. Padded, bra-like tops give support for those with larger chests and enhance those with smaller figures.
Specific styles are continued as in the bandeaus and monokinis. Also, a lot of details are incorporated, such as ruffles, ethnic or artsy prints, braiding, and ruching. Gold is a big add-on as well. For those that want some more coverage, boy shorts and brief-style bottoms are popular.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses for right now are reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. They lean more to the 50's and 60's as the frames tilt slightly upward at the top edges. Black is the most glamorous for this style, but tortoise shell and other patterns are also acceptable. The good thing about this trend is that they pair easily with a vintage bathing suit, a t shirt and jeans, or a fancy dress.
70's Inspired Trends
Wide legged trousers or jeans are acceptable for a casual outfit. Also, A tie blouse can be worn with these for work. Platform shoes are popular as cork wedges or espadrilles. Tie blouses and long-sleeved, loose and silk-like shirts are a dressed up solution. Silver is pushed aside as gold jewelry becomes more popular. Jumpsuits continue to be worn by many people, but it is hard to pull off. Make sure it is loose and has a drawstring. Overall, the aesthetic is less hippie and more glamour girl.

The term 'monokini' I was familiar with as the triangle that has, somewhat by way of very confident fashion, been worn as an item on its own, without a top. But I'm wondering if very recently its been used differently, and maybe you used it in a different sense, too. Anyway, interesting article!

My understanding of 'monokini', when describing a type of bathingsuit, means that is a one piece bathingsuit with large cut-outs on either side (hip area). There is usually one triangular piece connecting the top and bottom part of swimsuits that covers the belly button. Thanks!

No, I'm not big on minimalism, but it can be good if you want to compliment your outfit with various accessories. Oh ok.

Yes, minimalism means to have a solid color shirt or to have minimum decoration or style with clothing. In that way, accessories 'star' in an outfit and the clothing plays the 'supporting role'.
This is an interesting definition, yes; I hadn't though of this.
Like, a chunky necklace worn with big earrings, with a thin top, would be a case in point, I guess.

I guess you mean for the modern cut, the skirt being short enough is part of it, making it bright and sophisticated, rather than granny-like.

That's true, but skirts also can be knee-length and still fit well in the waist and around the hips.

Most of the time. I don't think I own any short skirts. Although, I usually wear and dress or pants.
It's funny how in the mid-60s (nearly 50 years) ago the standard skirt was almost thigh-high, but since then they've been doing the yo-yo.
It's today's grandmothers and nice little old ladies who used to wear them like that.

Mine only stay constant in that since I've been in middle school, I've never been overly girly and I like to wear casual clothes. I like some trends, but I usually just wear what I like. I have changed according to my age as well. Yes, that's a hard question to answer actually.
Yes I guess it's hard to be completely precise and even honest with oneself sometimes when it comes to personal preferences for clothes, accessories, make up, body art, shoes, and so forth. You must find fashion very interesting, anyway. In a sense, it's almost part of a personal journey, right? (As long as it doesn't become what the Apostle John calls loving the world and the things that are in the world.)

Yes, that's definitely true about Hubpages. I do have knowledge in both of those areas. Also, it is fairly easy for me to keep up with clothing trends via the internet.

I'm glad to see that the 70s look has come back, but with more glamour. I think it appeals to a broader, younger audience and makes the hippie inspired look more wearable everyday. I love the loose blouse tucked in the long shirt!
