Apparently, the person or people in the van hadn't seen Katy after she dove into the bushes. She heard the vehicle drive past and climb up another hill. Crippled with fear, she remained crouched and dared not breathe until she couldn't hear it anymore. She stood up slowly, brushed off some dirt, and looked around. There was nothing except a few bushes and trees on each side of the road. As before, she didn't see any signs of civilization. After looking both ways intently, she decided to continue following the path she had traveled before. Yes, that would mean she was going the same direction as the van, but Katy couldn't bear to be any closer to the hospital that had chained her for so long. So, she trudged on slowly.
After about an hour, she began to tire. She looked down at her feet, completely bare and now aching from walking so far. Katy was only dressed in a type of thin hospital gown. It was quite comfortable, but not exactly traveling clothes. Fortunately, it was warm, but she feared the night; it might get chilly in a few hours. "I better find somewhere I can stay for the night. But where?" She panicked, but was determined to find somewhere safe and halfway decent. Katy had seen roads she could have turned on, but she didn't really think anything of them until now. She conquered a particularly high hill and decided to veer off onto the nearest road. Fear creeped up her soul, but she buried it deep. She continued a half mile and then turned down the first road on her right.
Katy felt exhausted and worn down. She paused for a moment and looked at the street. Houses lined each side; they were of various sizes and they all looked different. Some were brick, others wood; some looked quite old while others looked recently built. "Hmmm..." she said softly out loud as she began to feel something that could be described as a cousin to déjà vu. She continued walking cautious, wary of people that might rush out of their houses to get a look at the crazy bare-footed woman. Katy just wanted to explore and maybe find some place of shelter; an abandoned building or something of the sort. She shuffled down the street, seeing no one out on their lawn. "They must be having dinner," she thought, suddenly hungry. She shook her head and kept going. There was another street to the right, so she took it. There were more random houses lining each side like before, but one stuck out to her and she wasn't sure why. It was at the end of the road on the left. This was an older cottage, but had been kept up well. The yellow paint was fairly new. For some reason, she found herself walking up the steps. Seeing a porch swing with a few throw pillows, she fell down on it from exhaustion and slept peacefully the whole night through.
